2011 Connecticut Farm Energy FairThe 1st Connecticut Farm Energy Fair was hosted by the Connecticut Farm Energy Program in partnership with the Institute for Sustainable Energy at Eastern CT State University. It addressed farm energy use; ways to save it, equipment to reduce its use, and even ways to generate it. With costs at an all time high, energy is now a major item of concern for the farming community. This event allowed Ag Producers to see real practical solutions with the latest technology available to help cut energy costs and reduce carbon emissions. Exhibitors at the event offered products and advice to help CT Ag Producers be more energy efficient as well as options for renewable energy; to save money and follow best management practices in their agriculture operation. Guest speakers addressed agricultural applications for energy efficiency and renewable energy in relation to application type, technology and funding opportunities. Visitors were also able to see first-hand the opportunities for diversification in energy generation and steps to take for energy efficiency on the farm. Keynote speaker was UConn Professor Richard Parnas. His talk entitled “How We can Produce and Use Biofuels In Connecticut” spoke about what the future holds for biofuels in Connecticut. The USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) offers Conservation Activity Plans (CAP) which are specialized, in-depth plans that address specific resources and can be used to improve management. NRCS in Connecticut offers CAPs in Forestry and Energy. The Energy Cap – the Agricultural Energy Management Plan (AgEMP) – is an analysis of current farm infrastructure and management with recommendations about how to reduce energy consumption on the farm. These plans can be done on farm headquarters such as dairy, greenhouse, or maple syrup operations. Participants will receive payment when the plan is complete. Payment rate is estimated to be a portion of the total amount you will pay for the plan – 75% for general applicants, and 90% of historically underserved* applicants. You will be responsible for paying the rest to the TSP Provider. To apply, call or visit your local NRCS Service Center: * www.nrcs.usda.gov/programs/SLB_Farmer/
